Most people taking hemp oil for the first time take too much, decide it does not do anything, and stop. The dose that actually works is usually quieter and slower than the marketing suggests. Here is how to find yours without wasting half a bottle in the process.
Start at the lowest line on the dropper
Almost every dropper has graduations on the glass — usually 0.25 ml, 0.5 ml, 0.75 ml, and 1 ml. Start at 0.25 ml. That is not a typo. A quarter-dropper of a 1,000 mg / 30 ml bottle is around 8 mg of CBD — enough to feel something if hemp oil is going to do anything for you, but small enough that you have not committed to anything you cannot walk back tomorrow.
Hold it under the tongue for sixty seconds
Sublingual absorption (under the tongue) is the reason hemp oil is sold as a tincture in the first place. The tissue under your tongue is thin and full of small blood vessels, and oil placed there reaches the bloodstream in minutes — not the forty-five-to-ninety it would take through the stomach. If you swallow the oil immediately, you have lost most of the reason for using a dropper in the first place. One full minute under the tongue is the floor.
Give it a week before you change anything
This is the part most people get wrong. Cannabinoids accumulate in the body in a way caffeine does not — the second day's dose is sitting on top of some of yesterday's, and so on. By day five or six you are at a steady level. If you change the dose on day three because nothing has happened, you have not given the dose a fair test. Pick a starting amount, hold it for seven days, then decide.
If 0.25 ml does nothing, go to 0.5 ml — not 1 ml
The temptation, when a small dose seems to do nothing, is to double or triple it. Resist. Step up by the same small increment you started with. Most people who get value out of hemp oil are sitting somewhere between 15 and 30 mg per day. Above that, you are usually paying more for diminishing returns — and below that, plenty of people feel exactly what they came for.
Keep one note a day, on paper
Sleep, mood, the thing you took it for. One sentence. After two weeks you will have something honest to look back on, and you will know whether what you are paying for is doing what you wanted. Without the note, the answer drifts.
